Fractions that Equal One

In this free math video, a bright 7-year-old gets a brief intro to fractions that equal one whole. Do this with various lengths until you see the light bulb go on in the student’s mind. It will take longer for some than others.

Cuisenaire Rods provide a visual and kinesthetic way for children to learn about numbers. They are also great for kids with dyslexia and dyscalculia!

Multiplying Teen Numbers Using the Formal Algorithm – Free Math Tutoring Video

This free math tutoring video explains conceptually the multiplication algorithm when multiplying two numbers between 10 and 19 using Cuisenaire Rods. This helps aid in understanding what the formula is all about. It is important that children know the formula, but it is also important that they know WHY it works. This video explains the “why.”

Squares from 10 to 20 – Free Math Tutoring Video

This free math tutoring video shows my 6 and 8-year-old daughters figuring out the squares of numbers 10 through 20. We use a variety of strategies. This activity is helpful in building thinking skills and further developing number sense. They are beginning to see numbers as a picture in their minds that they will carry with them forever.

Square numbers are used frequently in higher math. If they come into contact with them enough now while they are young, they will have no trouble applying this knowledge later on in middle and high school.
